Obanzai is Kyoto home cooking โ not kaiseki, not restaurant food, just what people here have been eating for generations. Seven years ago my neighbour Fumiko started letting me into her kitchen every Saturday morning. This is what I learned: pickled turnip with yuzu, simmered hijiki and aburaage, cold tofu with ginger and bonito, takenoko rice when bamboo shoots are in season. We eat at the kitchen table in my house in Fushimi, two streets from the brewery I've been buying sake from since I arrived. I usually open a bottle from there.
